Built in 1848, the Grand Hotel Kronenhof is one of the most architecturally significant hotels in the Alps. This listed building is the only five-star superior hotel in Pontresina and features 112 spacious rooms and suites, a spa covering over 2,000 m², and a variety of restaurants. As part of the ongoing modernisation of the historic Grand Hotel, 15 rooms, suites and junior suites across five floors have undergone a complete refurbishment – once again under the direction of interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, in collaboration with Rolf Som Architektur AG and the implementation expertise of GLAESER.

GLAESER’s implementation expertise

The Kronenhof entrusted GLAESER with the interior fit-out of the rooms, the entrance area, as well as the ceilings and dressing rooms. In the interview on the next page, hotel manager Marc Eichenberger explains what he particularly values about us.

Interview with Marc Eichenberger

GLAESER

Mr Eichenberger, what makes the Hotel Kronenhof unique?

Marc Eichenberger

As well as its architectural features, the hotel’s atmosphere is truly unique. The blend of tradition, modernity and warm hospitality, combined with our wide range of facilities, delights guests of all ages – many of our guests have been spending their holidays at the Kronenhof for generations.

GLAESER

What was the starting point and the aim of the refurbishment?

Marc Eichenberger

The 15 renovated rooms, junior suites and suites were last updated in the late 1990s, so in addition to the rather classic design, the technical fittings in the rooms were also outdated. The aim was to create guest rooms with a feel-good factor, combining contemporary interiors with stylish, modern design and building on the most recent room refurbishment of 2016/2017.

GLAESER

What role does a hotel’s interior design play in its success?

Marc Eichenberger

Of course, location and amenities play an important role for guests when choosing a hotel. However, the sense of comfort they can expect – which includes, among other things, the hotel’s facilities and interior design – is also a decisive factor when making a booking. For hotel guests, the room is always a place of retreat and a private space within the public hotel – in other words, their home away from home. It is precisely this feeling of ‘being at home’ that can be enhanced by a skilful spatial and design concept.

GLAESER

What makes the design and interior fit-out particularly distinctive?

Marc Eichenberger

The proximity to the local natural environment and culture, as well as a respect for the hotel’s history. For French interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, who was once again responsible for the redesign of the Kronenhof, it is important to incorporate the history and character of the building into the renovation and carry them forward into the future.

GLAESER

How are the new rooms being received by guests?

Marc Eichenberger

Guests are universally delighted with the newly refurbished rooms. In particular, the spacious, harmonious layout, the light colours, the choice of materials and the stunning windows – which practically bring the outdoors into the room – have garnered a great deal of positive feedback. The walk-in wardrobes and dressing rooms, as well as the spacious bathrooms with natural light, also bring a sparkle to guests’ eyes.

GLAESER

Where were the particular challenges?

Marc Eichenberger

The building’s original structure dates back to before the turn of the century, and with historic buildings, one must always expect surprises. The fact that the premises on the third floor are listed buildings also had an impact on the rooms to be renovated on the other floors. With the start of the summer season in July 2020, noisy work had to be suspended so as not to disrupt ongoing operations. Due to the complete gutting of the core, it was a project with a very tight schedule. Additional pressure was caused by concerns that construction sites would have to be put on hold due to the pandemic.

GLAESER

How satisfied are you personally with the result?

Marc Eichenberger

Very satisfied! The result blends seamlessly into the overall design of the Kronenhof and marks another milestone in the hotel’s modernisation.

GLAESER

What is the nature of the collaboration with Rolf Som Architektur AG?

Marc Eichenberger

We have been working very closely and successfully with Rolf Som Architektur AG for many years. Having a local partner for large-scale projects builds trust and helps us to respond quickly to unexpected challenges. Thanks to our long-standing collaboration and the various projects we have undertaken, Mr Som knows the building inside out.

GLAESER

In your view, what sets GLAESER apart?

Marc Eichenberger

GLAESER impresses with its reliable, proactive and professional approach. The company has made a significant contribution to the successful completion of the project. The team responds very well to the requirements of the client and the architectural practice, and impresses with its high standards and flexibility in collaboration, including during the execution of the work on site.
