GLAESER
Last September, the Jakob and Emma Windler Foundation opened a new cultural venue, the Kulturhaus Obere Stube, in Stein am Rhein. Who are the exhibitions in this historic building aimed at?
Helga Sandl
Our aim is to be a welcoming venue that has something to offer people of all ages. That is why our exhibition programme features historical exhibitions as well as changing displays by contemporary national and international artists. In addition to a series of concerts and talks, we also offer a wide range of workshops for children and young people.
GLAESER
The history of the building in the picturesque old town of Stein am Rhein dates back to the 13th century. To what extent is this history evident in the premises?
Carmen Gasser Derungs
The building has a rich and varied history, which can still be seen today in its various architectural features and construction phases. In the guild hall alone, where the permanent exhibition is housed, one can discern a variety of layers and stories. Working in collaboration with experts and the heritage conservation authorities, the aim was to create a space that, in a cohesive and understated manner, allows visitors to sense the former significance of this historic room.
GLAESER
In what way did the building’s historical significance influence the design of the interior?
Helga Sandl
In consultation with the heritage conservation authorities, compromises were reached to enhance the sense of space and atmosphere, whilst ensuring the careful preservation of the guild hall, dating from 1469, and the guild room, dating from 1681.
Carmen Gasser Derungs
The original guild hall was once a place for debate and celebration; now it serves to bring history to life. The exhibition and its associated structures have a strong physical presence in the hall, yet the walls remain uncluttered. The guild hall, as the main feature and the true conduit of history, can still be experienced.
GLAESER
What effect are the premises, in combination with the upcoming exhibitions, intended to have on visitors?
Carmen Gasser Derungs
The history of the space and the stories told by the exhibitions are reflected in the new elements within the room. This suggests a multidimensionality and complexity of the past, designed to both fascinate and slightly unsettle visitors.
Helga Sandl
The atmosphere of these historic premises has been preserved. The upcoming exhibitions create a sense of anticipation, as the display cases and the artefacts within them bring new stories to the building. In this way, we continue to write the building’s history.
GLAESER
The display cases in the exhibitions are by BÖHM. How do they contribute to the atmosphere at the Kulturhaus Obere Stube?
Helga Sandl
With their mirrored finish, the display cabinets lend a sense of lightness and a touch of playfulness to the large guild hall, thereby having a significant impact on the overall look of the room.
Carmen Gasser Derungs
The display cases and plinths stand out from the existing fixtures and speak a new language. The structures seem to float above the floor, reflecting the dark hall. In these reflections, visitors and the space come together – and with them, history and the present.
GLAESER
How did the collaboration with BÖHM come about?
Carmen Gasser Derungs
We were looking for partners with the expertise to manufacture high-quality display cases and showcases and install them meticulously on site. In BÖHM, we found a partner capable of meeting the stringent requirements regarding security, climate control and operational aspects. Setting up the exhibition was a challenge for all parties involved – both technically and in terms of time. However, the result is impressive.
